You're a rookie: learn the road one tour at a time
Accept that you are still learning
- Your first tours are not proof that you know Morocco.
- They're where you begin learning it.
- The biggest problem is ego: people get their first job and act as if they know everything.
- If you are new, accept that you are a rookie.
- Ask questions, accept criticism, call experienced drivers, speak to local guides and learn from anyone who knows more than you.
Study tomorrow's road
- On my early tours, after dropping the travelers at their hotel, I would open the next day's itinerary and Google Maps.
- I studied the road, saved the stops and looked at places worth understanding.
- Even with a printed itinerary, I wanted to know what lay ahead.
- On later tours I recognised more, and every journey added another piece of knowledge.
Research stops and respect the programme
- You can notice an interesting stop and make a note to research it for another journey.
- That doesn't mean you can unilaterally change the operator's sold programme today.
- Learn the geography, the timing, access and the people.
- Ask even when you worry you're asking too much.
Build confidence through experience
- The first couple of years, your job is to learn, brother.
- Each tour teaches you something if you keep your head down and pay attention.
- Real confidence comes after that work, not before it.
